ABOUT US

Hey ya'll!
We're a Radio, Television and Broadcasting club! That is to say we're into independant film-making and radio recording! So if you're interested in someday being on television or maybe being a deejay to a prominent radio chanel then you sure have come to the right place! We try to give everyone a chance because we like to believe that we are fair enough so rest assured you will be given the opportunities to dabble here and there before eventually deciding where your aptitude really lies!

Or realy you can just join us for the fun of it because there's never...(well HARDLY never) a dull moment with COSTA. Be it our organized activities, weekly futsal sessions , and let's not forget the trips which we are rather fond of having every now and then!

The thing you must remember is that because of the nature of broadcasting, we are rather humanitarian and believe in advocating for human and environmental rights so, if you are looking for a place to earn some cash, you might as well transfer off to the Monash Business club or something. Because really if that is you, all the ammount of cash we donate to charities will probably make you cry!

But otherwise we sincerely hope you have an AWESOME time with COSTA!

IT'S ALL BOUT THE COMMUNICATION BABY!

New Year, New Dreams!

Hey there Costalites!

Happy new year and I hope ya'll have been having yourself an awesome kick-ass semester so far! Anyway, just to let you know, we've got some awesome possum upcoming events planned for you this semester itself and the first, and most upcoming one shall be the members meeting, proposed to be held on the 31st of March
(I know it is pushing it a little late...but well, there's just a few of us exco running the show here!)

But formalities aside, there's always the COSTA bash to look forward to and every year (and because we believe in self expression and all that jazz), COSTA makes it a themed party which means not only the games, but the food and the atmosphere will be decorated and jazzed up as much as possible to fit in with the theme. This even is scheduled to take place on the second of April. The theme this year is non other than the classical movie genre of HORROR!

Why am I telling you this now? Simply because it will give you time to think of what you want to do at the party itself. You will definitely see US in costume, and even some of our lecturers! Now, a costume is not exactly compuslary but...well you wouldn't want to be left out would you?!

On another note, I'm going to just take us back to last year's event of the Monash Street Carnival where, through selling our little handmade braceletts and cupcakes, COSTA managed to make enough money to sponsor the satellite monitering of two endangered sea-turtles, one in Indonesia and hte other just off the coast of Australia. They are both females and because of new satelitte technology we can check their movements and where they may have deposited their eggs.

If you're interested do check out seaturtle.org.

Also, in relation to that, does anyone have an interest in helping ure dear COSTA exco out during the Monash Musical Festival on the 25th of April? Once again, we'll be setting up a booth and could use all the help we can get! Interested folks just send me an email at
monashcosta@gmail.com.

As for workshops, there will be a photography workshop this semester, once again fully sponsored, and we will not only offer photograph taking skills but editing skills through photoshop as well! More details on that to come.

Finally before I leave ya'll, there's something else we wish to do this semester and that is the one and only Students vs. Lecturers DODGEBALL Tournament! Although the dates for the tournament is yet to be confirmed, I suppose it's only fair to voice out that we are only going to use Lecturers from the School of Arts as COSTA is, after all is said and done, essentially a division under the School of Arts. But seeing as how many students have arts electives, I'm sure you will find SOME satisfaction in hurling a hard, red ball at one of the lecturers!

And that's all we've got planned for you this semester.

I hope you enjoy your term in COSTA.

Signing off,

Cyren.

Hiatus and COSTA bash!

Hey ya'll!

Due to assignments and some problems, I haven't been as faithful in my blog updating duties as I shoud have. Anyways, the pictures form the bash are in and here they are. Enjoy.

But before we go into anything else, here are the AWESOME POSSUM organizers! (excellent editing by the way Anthea!) with the heroes (Wei Liang as Astroboy, Natasha as Wonder Gal, and Bats as Bat Chick) on the right and the villains (Abeer as The Sonic Youth, Caryn as the Mad Scientist and Cyren as Poison Oak) on the left...but of course that doesn't mean we're nasty.

Relax girls (and guys!) he's not flashing anybody...

It's just that awesome costumes were hard to come up with (what with our small budget) and we had to make do with stuff bought at the local arts store!

It's not exactly a mirror image...but I'd say the results were fairly satisfactory! And...Wei Liang didn't feel comfortable going around topless for the entire night!

But, costume or not, it was still a great opportunity for students...

And lecturers to let it all hang loose. That's probably Chin Huat's impression of "I'm a politician, here me roar!"

Oh wait...he actually CAME as one :)!
But that's not all you will see of our awesome lecturers.

Then, the moment we had all been waiting for, Dr. Andrew, Monash University's resident Divo lending us his harmonious rendition of "When You Tell Me That You Love Me!" Yes! We've got sporting, brainy AND talented lecturers...be very jealous!

But there was some problem with the food so we had to stall. Of course one thing led to another and first we had...

One of our awesome Emcees Rashaad a.k.a SuperJew trying to keep people entertained...

And of course.

Poison Oak's (in)famous and "controversial" "anti-feminist" dildo joke! and that's Aaron by the way, our ex Costa Vice President behind me.

Then came someone to the rescue. *cue lights and action music*
It was SUPER FEMINIST, defender of Women's Rights Around The World

Poison Oak: Noooooooo (voice trails off)

But of course the food came and saved me anymore awkward moments

Turns out the reason for the holdup was our Resident Mad Scientist, Caryn had filled all the cups with Kryptonite in an attempt to poison the superheroes...no actually we were jsut waiting for the extra Pizza to arrive

And some random pictures from the rest of the night for your viewing pleasure!

It's not to late to join COSTA

Hey ya'll!

Regarding a couple of emails I've been getting recently, I would like to stress that just because CnS week is now over, it is still not too late to join COSTA! So here is the answer to all of your emails! YES! You can still join COSTA and YES there will be a photography division this year!

So what do you do if you wish to join COSTA!

Well, you could always sign up during the COSTA BASH this coming Thursday and meet the new members or, you could always hunt down one of us (you must admit that most of us are pretty loud or difficult to ignore) and sign up at anytime!

Lookin' forward to all the new members this year because really, I don't think I have ever seen such enthusiastic members...anywhere!

On a different note, I do appreciate that most of you have sought to see me personally to RSVP for the COSTA Bash event but please, if you cannot find one of us, do drop and email or something as it will make it SO MUCH easier for us to ensure that everything goes smoothly!

And just so you know, Dr. Andrew (yes, he's one of our arts lecturers) who is a superb singer will show us his vocal talents as a guest star for the event!

COSTA BASH: A night of Justice and Villainy

Hey ya'll!

I know it seems like I am taking a lot of work upon myself regarding the upcoming COSTA BASH but really, you musn't start thinking that I am so noble and all that because really, the reasons for it are rather selfish! You see, after all the "boasting" I did during the CnS Week I really have no idea where I will hide my face if the event flops (which it most certainly will not!) *you can read more about this at my blog*

At any rate if there is a point in updating (I'm still questioning if people come here!), Caryn and I have already picked up the masks and I am quite sure Abeer will find something rather interesting in Petaling Street tomorrow!

In the meantime I have also gotten those creative juices flowing by coming up with some promo posters for the event. Well basically the concept was to draw on one of the most basic fantasies people have i.e being a superhero! I have attempted to create the atmosphere that at the COSTA BASH people will leave the real world for two hours and enter comic book world. Check it out.

Poster #1 Poison Ivy and Batman

Poster#2 Joker, Harley and Ivy vs. The Batman

Poster#3 The League Wants You!

Poster#4 Join the Secret League of Villains

Poster#5 Sizzlin' Starfire

Poster#6 Showdown!!!

SO what do you think? Not too shabby if I do say so myself although I must say I could've done better with Joker's picture! Ah well expect to see these up by (looks at Bats) say Monday or Teusday next week?

COSTA BASH

hey ya'll!

As you may recall from what we've been telling you, there will be a COSTA bash next week on Thursday to welcome all our new members!

It will be a night of FREE food, fun and games and best of all, in synch with all the movies that have been coming out recently, the theme of the party will be SUPERHEROES!!!

But no fear! The costumes (and your superpowers) will be given to you upon entry though, I daresay if you feel like dressing up on your own to celebrate the occasion then all the better! Here's the thing, if you've already paid your registration fee of RM5 entry is TOTALLY free!

However, those of you who wish to pay on the day of the bash itself will have to pay a late penalty of another RM5 which makes it RM10 in total. So make sure if your heart is set on COSTA that you pay the fee when we meet next week for our first meeting!

I know it all sounds rather money-minded but..really we're not! All of our cash goes to some charity or another! Unlike other societies and organizations we cannot sleep well at night knowing we (from rather well to do famillies) let some poor animal or person suffer from not benefiting from the money we make!

Some of your tutors and even lecturers will be attending so, if you want to see your lecturer acting like Joker or something make sure you don't miss the event!

Note, prizes will be given for the triumphant superhero/supervillain of the night based on the games we play so I daresay it is going to be rather interesting!

See ya there!

A day in their shoes

Hey ya'll!

I'm here today to talk a little about the COSTA trip we had last semester to the Chow Kit area where we were introduced to the life of transexual sex-workers in Malaysia. I must admit that many of us went there with rather superficial preconcieved thoughts. It really is not difficult to see how you enter a strange environment bringing with you suspicions. It's actually quite normal really because most of us really didn't know what to expect!

Questions like
"What should I say?"
"What questions can I ask her?"
"Do I refer to them as 'him' or 'her'?!"

were running through most of our minds. Yet, I can say that as the session went on, we managed to break down the barrier that social stigma and convention has built around us. And that is what it is really all about.

At the PT foundation we learnt a lot about HIV and Safe Sex, but more importantly the social stigma that surrounds most transexual and homosexual people. Just in case you were not aware, PT which stands for Pink Triangle is a LGBT rights group whose symbolism has historic roots from the time of the Nazis. Homosexuals who were herded (along with the Jews) into the Death camps often had a pink triangle stamped into their uniforms.

The woman we talked to revealed a lot about life, more specifically about loving life and really living it the fullest to what you are.

At the end of the day I will not go as far to say as we completely understood what went on in the life of a transexual sex-worker, but we most certainly learnt to look at them no different than one would look at a fellow human being.

This is what you newbies can expect from our COSTA trips. We're not gonna take you somwhere like a muzium or a theme park (let's leave Genting for our end of the year trip!)...because really, it's all about the people and it's all about the various different cultures and lifestyles that we may not know of, or may vaguely know of and have a wrong perception about.

The dark narrow entrance to PT masked the warm welcoming atmosphere we recieved inside! This is us helping them make Safe Sex purses.
